10 Times MCU Movies Missed Out Key Plot Points
8. Stark's Battle With Alcohol - Iron Man 2
The seminal Demon In A Bottle arc gave us a taste of Tony at absolute rock bottom. By the time this arc came along, Stark was already problematic when it came to his drinking habits. Yet things get worse when - and I swear I'm not making this up - a flying tank crashes into a plane.
As he investigates, it becomes clear that the tank was thrown by Namor trying to help a group of islanders who were being forcibly removed by Roxxon. A group of Roxxon shoulders then detonate all the explosives in the area. The blast caused issues with the Iron Man armor, which lead to a deadly malfunction that cost the life of the Carnelian ambassador. During the fallout, Tony agreed to give up the the armour but filled his spare time with drinking.
Fast forward to the titular issue and Iron Man isn't as incredible as he once was. Having to deal with the guilt of taking an innocent life, Stark went off the deep end. He fights with Jarvis, causes a toxic waste spill and eventually realises he cannot continue down this path. With help from his then girlfriend Beth, the two work to rid Stark of his addiction in a tough to read page.
It's understandable Marvel wouldn't adapt this story, the MCU has always been a family franchise and something this dark and emotional wouldn't fit the brand.
