10 Times MCU Movies Missed Out Key Plot Points
4. Hawkeye Is Deaf - The Avengers
Despite appearing in 6 movies so far, Clint Barton has never really got the treatment the character deserves. Renner's portrayal of the character as a small cog in S.H.I.E.L.D and a family man is a stark contrast to the Hawkeye we've grown accustomed to in the comics.
Not much light was shed on the character's backstory. There has been no mention of his circus upbringing or the mentor-turned-villain Swordsman who taught him. One crucial omission from the character's back story is Clint's hearing loss. This naturally upset hearing impaired comic fans who were excited to have some form of representation on the big screen.
During a team up with Mockingbird, the pair face off with Crossfire; the villainous cousin to Clint's employer Darren Cross. Crossfire gave himself cybernetic prosthetics when an attempt on his life went wrong, costing him his left eye and ear. With these implants, Cross gained the ability to control minds with ultrasonic sound. Hawkeye manages to defeat the villain, disrupting the implants using a sonic arrow. However this wasn't a complete win. The effects of the arrow rendered Clint 80% deaf and ensured he would need hearing aids for the rest of his life.
Hawkeye's upcoming Disney+ show may shed more light on this, as we delve deeper into the MCU version of the character. It's possible to explain the lack of visible hearing aids quite easily. After all, there's no chance Stark wouldn't be able to knock up some nanotech device to assist Barton. The recent casting of Lauren Ridloff as fellow deaf hero Makkari means there's nothing holding Marvel Studios back from incorporating Clint's hearing loss going forward.
