10 Times Movie Directors Went Too Far To Get A Scene

5. Quentin Tarantino - Choking Diane Kruger

A Tarantino movie without some controversy would be unimaginable. Wether it be the explicit use of language or the gratuitous depictions of violence, Tarantino has drawn flack from critics, politicians, and journalists with every film he's released. His response is usually something to the effect of "It's not real life".

Well, that wasn't necessarily the case for Diane Kruger during the filming of Inglorious Basterds (2009).

In her final moments, Bridget von Hammersmark (Kruger) is subjected to the wrath of Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), who uses his bare hands to throttle her to death. It's a memorable moment, not least for the unnervingly realistic look of panic on Kruger's face. But that's because the decision was made to actually choke her.

Rather than having someone else take the blame if things went wrong, Tarantino opted to do the deed himself. In one of the more unnerving cameos in cinema history, Tarantino slipped on a Nazi jacket, and proceeded to choke out his leading lady. He had health and safety people standing by, to ensure that he only choked Kruger for just long enough for her eyes to start bulging.
