10 Times Prosthetics Nearly Broke An Actor

9. Robin Williams - Popeye

Though many actors have been known to hit the weights and seriously pack on the muscle to play physically impressive characters, that was never going to be on the cards with the role of Popeye in the 1980 live action adaptation.

Those legendary in-human forearms took over an hour to apply to comedy sensation Robin Williams, but it definitely wasn't just a case of throwing on some rubber arms and letting the actor spread his wings.

Cutting off the circulation in his arms, Williams claimed that 'They tied me off almost as if I were a junkie.'

Things got so painful for Williams whilst wearing the prosthetic arms on set that filming had to be completely halted - at times every half-an-hour - just so he could get the blood flowing around his arms again.

Popeye turned out to be a bit of damp squib in the end. But, Williams worked his ass off to make his version of the spinach munching ever-winking sailor man as impressive as possible, even if that meant constantly losing the ability to move his arms due to an extreme lack of circulation.
