Just before the release of Avengers: Endgame, one of the most anticipated movies in recent cinematic memory, the Russo brothers gave the world one more reason to be excited by teasing the inclusion of the franchise’s first openly gay character.

This was huge, as diversity and representation is one of the few areas where the franchise needs to make a conscious step forward. However, the moment that was alluded to insulted fans who were led to expect something of real substance.

The character in question wasn’t even given a name, and was portrayed by Joe Russo in a blink and you’ll miss it moment. He had around ten seconds of screen time, and had absolutely no impact on the overall movie. The intentions were good, but fans were not happy.

This may not have even been so bad had the directors not talked about it and drawn attention to it beforehand, as it raised expectations of a true LGBTQ+ character just to have them dashed with a glorified cameo. Fans have instead had to wait until Eternals’ Phastos for the franchise’s first openly gay hero over two years later.
