10 Times The MCU Betrayed Your Trust
1. The Mandarin (Iron Man 3)
After Tony Stark had gone toe to toe with Obadiah Stane, Ivan Vanko, and Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man 3 was finally bringing in one of his greatest ever foes from the source material. Not only that, Sir Ben Kingsley was cast to bring the Mandarin to life. This was going to be good.
However, though in theory this had the makings of an awesome MCU villain, as that is what the Mandarin was portrayed as for the first half of the movie, the most infamous and divisive scene in MCU history pulled the rug from under fans.
No, Sir Ben Kingsley was not playing the globally feared Mandarin, he was playing Trevor Slattery, a drug fueled actor who Aldrich Killian had hired to be the face of his terrorist organization. To say that fans were pissed off is an understatement. Though there can be some humour found in the character, particularly upon his return in Shang-Chi, fans wanted the Mandarin.
Instead of putting him on the big screen as he should have been, Marvel Studios took the character, one of the strongest in their arsenal in terms of Iron Man villains, and made a joke out of him.
