10 Totally Unanswered Questions From Your Favourite Christmas Films
2. Love Actually - Divorce, Separation, or ...?
There are a ton of flaws with Love Actually. A ton. I still enjoy watching it, not gonna lie about that one. Of all the questions that are left unanswered, though, one in particular nags me to no end. One story line follows the relationship of an aging business man (Alan Rickman) with his ballooning, frumpy wife (Emma Thompson) and his grief with a potential affair. His wife stumbles upon the truth while going through his pockets and realizing that the beautiful necklace she found was not for her. At the end of the movie, with nothing having been sorted through, we see the couple at the airport greeting one another, but remaining tight lipped in front of their oddly young children. So, my question is: what is going on? Have the two divorced? Are they legally separated? Are they still living together and trying to stay together for the kids? What is going on? I can only imagine that, as it is Rickman's character who is arriving at the airport and it is Thompson's character who is picking him up (begrudgingly, to say the least) that they decided to take some time apart without any legal action and he has returned from a trip to get away from the pressure of his ever diminishing and now completely pissed off wife. I just don't understand why they address every other character's story line except for these two, who happen to be portrayed by the best actors in the cast. Perhaps the writers thought that their acting would overshadow the fact that they forgot to include the conclusion of their plot.
