10 Totally Unanswered Questions From Your Favourite Christmas Films

3. White Christmas - Replacing The Rug

As I mentioned earlier, I managed to watch White Christmas this year. For the first time in ages, I sat and watched the whole thing, not just had it on and stopped doing whatever whenever they started signing and dancing. This movie left me with a few questions, but none compared to the confusion of the hotel rug fiasco. One of the key elements to the plot is that the Haynes Sisters are chased out of their gig in Florida by a hotel manager who wants to charge them for damages to the room they were staying in. In an attempt to be gallant, Davis tell them that he and Wallace will take care of it, which they don't, to my utter dismay. The four then escape the clutches and jump on a train to Vermont. Why does this never come back to haunt them? What is the story with the rug? And why does it cost $97 to take a train from Florida to New York City, but it costs $200 to replace a sh*t carpet in a sh*t hotel? I get angry about this because Wallace even offers to pay for the carpet, but Davis says no. Instead, they will dress up like the Haynes Sisters and perform and then run out of the club like fugitives, even though they have done nothing wrong. You would think that $200 is a lot of money back in those days and with an act as famous as Wallace and Davis attached to such a hefty fee, the problem would have had to be solved at least by the end of the movie. Another quick question I have about White Christmas: does Benny Haynes even exist? We don't meet him in the beginning when Wallace and Davis are in the army, we don't meet him when all of the soldiers reunite at the General's hotel, and we don't meet him just randomly as a brother wanting to spend the holidays with his sister's and friends from the army. So... is he real? Whatever.
