2. "Cheer Up Charlie" - Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
I love musical numbers as much as the next guy that also loves musical numbers, but don't you hate it when you stumble upon a musical with one redundant song that never seems to end? That's how I felt as a kid whenever I sat down and watched Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and "Cheer Up Charlie" came on. Because this song always felt dull to me, and I was too lazy to fast forward. When I grew up, I thought I'd learn to appreciate it more or something, but I realised my kid-self was right: "Cheer Up Charlie" is mere filler. Hear me out. "Cheer Up Charlie" is the same point hammered home (cheer up, basically - life's not so bad) over the sum of three minutes. A simple line of dialogue would have done. And it's not as if the visuals going alongside this scene are spectacular, as to excuse it. It's just shots of Charlie walking around looking blue with the words "cheer up Charlie" being sung over the top, over and over again. It's boring to watch, and it doesn't tell us anything that we already didn't know about Charlie and his family already. Three minutes of somebody telling a kid to cheer up. And three minutes of me thinking about whether or not I should fast-forward the tape.
