Depending on your perspective, the ending of High Tension is either one of the best horror reveals ever or one of the worst. Either way, it certainly is a giant WTF. The movie follows two friends, Marie and Alex, who go to stay at Alex's parents house for a weekend. Things go south when a serial killer arrives, killing Alex's father and going on a rampage. It's a tense and well constructed film with a simple narrative, and then you get to that third act... It turns out that there is no serial killer at all, and Marie is delusional and actually murdered everyone herself. It's an enormous shock, and the story instantly becomes a lot more complex. On the other hand, so many of the film's events make very little sense in retrospect, as Marie would have to be in multiple places at once, and there's a part where we see the killer sitting in a truck that Marie didn't even know about yet, not to mention it's hard to believe she'd have the strength to do all the things the killer supposedly does. If you don't think about it too much and just want an ending that you won't see coming, though, High Tension delivers. Just maybe don't watch it a second time.
