10. The Imitation Game
The Tragic Ending: Alan Turing (played here by Benedict Cumberbatch) was a great man, in possession of an even greater intellect. He and his team at Bletchley Park were to said to have shortened WWII significantly in cracking the Enigma code, while Turing's machine used to break the cipher formed the blueprint for modern computers. To reward Turing, The British government decided to arrest him in 1952 for being a homosexual, then gave him the option of jail or undergoing hormonal treatment to quell his carnal desires. He chose the latter, then died two years later in an apparent suicide. The Silver Lining: This is one you know has a silver lining - Alan Turing may have died discredited and vilified in a time when merely to give in to his natural sexual urges was a crime, but you wouldnt be reading this now without him. If it wasnt for Turing, the ability to look at cats doing cute and/or funny things on laptops wouldnt be possible today.
