Most movie-goers will admit that the Pirates series has been going down the pan ever since the freewheeling fun of the first movie was swapped out for increasingly incomprehensible plots, inconsistent characters, and more CGI that you can shake a Michael Bay set-piece at. So what does the trailer for the latest chapter tell us?

To expect more of the same, really: huge, expensive-looking set-pieces, enough CGI to fill out a dozen Transformers movies (seriously: this looks like it was made entirely on a computer), and a plot that - even recounted in simplistic, trailer terms - feels unnecessarily convoluted, what with its awkward retconning and ties to other Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Javier Bardem is the villain in this one, continuing his mission to play a psychopathic baddie in every major movie franchise. But the trailer gives us a mumbling, CGI-heavy mess of a man, one who already feels ripe for parody.

And what's with the Brenton Thwaites character, who - as Sparrow's latest sidekick - is set to play Will Turner's son? Granted, Will Turner and his son are bound to be similar people, but where's the sense in giving us a retread of a character we've already had (especially since Orlando Bloom is also set to star)? Confirmation, perhaps, that this series really has come full circle and it's time to sink the ship.
