6. Harrison Ford - What Lies Beneath

Jared Leto Joker
20th Century Fox

Harrison Ford hasn’t played many villains throughout his career, and tends to stick doggedly to heroic characters. His role in What Lies Beneath didn’t look like anything out of the ordinary, other than the fact his character admits to having had an affair to his heartbroken wife.

It becomes clear by the end there’s more to it than that, and it’s revealed he murdered his ex-lover when she threatened to ruin his life. To protect himself he tries to kill his wife when she learns the truth; she has to fight back with a little help from the ghost of her romantic rival.

While Ford’s character is a little more dubious than normal, no one knew he was playing an out and out villain. He’s pretty great at it too, playing the character with smug detachment until his wife gains the upper hand.

In retrospect, it might have been a good thing Ford hadn’t played many bad guy roles since it allows the twist here to be a real surprise.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
