10 Truly Awful Movies That Made Obscene Amounts Of Money

7. The Last Airbender (2010)

Budget: $150m Total Box Office: $319.7m US Home Video Sales: $39.5m After the double whammy of Lady in the Water and The Happening, M. Night Shyamalan surprised everybody by making a movie that was somehow even worse. Featuring incomprehensible action scenes, wooden dialogue and some of the worst acting ever seen in a blockbuster movie, The Last Airbender is arguably one of the worst big budget pictures ever made. The movie managed to infuriate both fans of the original and much loved animated series, along with anybody with a working set of eyes. The 3D post conversion was horrendous, and from an Academy Award nominated writer the script is bogged down in mountains of exposition, with very little in the way of levity. There are a few visual flourishes, but that's really about it. The Last Airbender swept the board at that year's Razzie Awards, going home with trophies for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor and Worst 3D yet somehow became a box office success. It must have had something to do with the appeal of the original series, because the movie really sucked. The Last Airbender opened to a strong $40.3m domestically, and sailed past nine-figure mark to close with $131.8m. The international numbers were a little disappointing for such an expensive project, but for a movie with such an overwhelmingly negative critical reaction the fact that it earned over $300m is nothing short of astonishing, with a further cash boost coming from almost two million US home video sales. Originally envisioned as the first of a trilogy, the sheer awfulness of the final product killed any sequel talk immediately, which was probably for the best.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
