6. A "Philosophical Sequel" To Contagion

Though Steven Soderbergh's Contagion was a critical and commercial success upon initial release a decade ago, nobody could've ever predicted its massive resurgence in popularity due to how eerily it captured the global mood during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Contagion became one of the most-streamed films around the world during the onset of the pandemic, and last December director Soderbergh confirmed that a "philosophical sequel" to the thriller was in development.

While Soderbergh has been coy about giving much away, he confirmed that Contagion writer Scott Z. Burns was collaborating with him on the project, and that it would tackle similar themes to Contagion albeit in a "different context." He added:

"You'll kind of look at the two of them as kind of paired, but very different hair colors. So, Scott and I had been talking about, 'So, what's the next iteration of a Contagion-type story?' We have been working on that; we should probably hot-foot it a little bit."

It's fair to say that audiences are already fed up with those few pandemic-specific films that have hit screens over the last year, so if Soderbergh's film is more pandemic-adjacent than strictly concerned with our own reality, that's probably for the best.
