A great deal has been said about how Upgrade was the better Venom movie than the real deal despite having a similar plot (and even similar-looking leads) and this narrative exists with good reason.

The Leigh Whannell directed effort features a fleshed-out cyberpunk world and impressive visuals on a shoe-string budget and features some of the most creative and brutal set-pieces of its contemporaries.

The action sequences feature a unique blend of the film's cybernetic technology and good old fashioned human potential. This is seen in the fight between Grey (Logan Marshall-Green) and tertiary antagonist Fisk Brantner (Benedict Hardie).

The scene greatly benefits from remarkable camera work and sound design, as well as choreography that sells the mechanical/inhuman movements of the combatants and helps define them as near equals who can match each other blow for blow.

Ultimately, Grey emerges as the victor due to his innovation (or lack of reliance on his AI, surprising Branter in the process, and leads to one of the many gory deaths in the film.
