10 TV Show Finales Fans Totally Rejected

7. Dexter

Game Of Thrones finale
Showtime

Dexter's first four seasons were some of the finest TV drama of the 2000s. The latter four seasons? Less so, capped off by a legendarily lousy series finale which tied off Dexter Morgan's (Michael C. Hall) story - or rather, didn't - in a manner that left few fans satisfied.

Fans had speculated for years on how Dexter's arc would conclude - namely whether he would be killed by somebody or brought to justice - but few could've anticipated where he'd actually end up.

But first, Dexter's sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) suffers a stroke during surgery and goes into a vegetative state. This prompts Dexter to disconnect her life support and improvise a burial at sea, before Dexter himself appears to drown in the raging storm.

But of course, the final scene reveals that Dexter is alive and well, living under an assumed name in Oregon where he works as a lumberjack.

This felt more like low-effort fan fiction than an actual ending written by someone involved with the show, and naturally left fans nonplussed.

More than seven years after the finale aired, however, it was announced that a 10-episode revival was in the works, which will presumably attempt to fashion a more satisfying post-script for Dex. Fingers crossed.
