10 Uncomfortable Truths Movies Force You To Confront

5. Life Is Mostly Random

Film as a medium tends to rely on a lot of contrivance because, of course, we wouldn't have a story otherwise; had the chance encounter between the guy and girl not occurred in the first place, this wouldn't be a rom-com, and so on. Some filmmakers are better than others at dressing up or disguising these convolutions, while some choose to brave it head on, noting how destiny and fate ordained that the characters would get the girl or vanquish the bad guy from the outset. Movies like Slumdog Millionaire, with their virulent faith in everything happening because it must, might appeal to the more spiritual among us, but as a nihilistic heathen, I believe in nothing but a random universe. If films wanted to be truly reflective of life, they would feature a collection of random events happening to someone, until nothing happens anymore and the film can end; it would be awful and nobody would watch it, hence why films opt to go another way. Of course, it makes sense that people would ascribe a narrative-like track to their lives, because it allows them an easier way to provide meaning to their lives, except of course the difference being that life as a collective construct doesn't have a protagonist, and so it all just becomes a big jumble, like an anthology film without a clear direction or point - oh, that's Movie 43, then.
