10 Under-Appreciated Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics
2. Assassination Nation
Holy hell; Assassination Nation is one wild ride. The film feels like a fever dream and highlights Sam Levinson’s crazy filmmaking style more than tells an absorbing story. A group of four high school girls’ lives are turned upside down after everyone in the town’s phones are hacked. The film’s violent, sexy, bright, loud, intense, and also very violent. The movie only earned a 56% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes while critics were much more forgiving at 73%.
This movie is not for an older or conservative crowd; Levinson understands teenage culture and doesn’t hold back with how cruel and absolutely indecent it can be. Joel McHale, Bella Throne, and Bill Skarsgård are the only recognizable faces and stay to small supporting roles.
The film stars virtually all newcomers and with good reason; few established stars would be willing to take on a film as obscene as this. The film was completely absent from most critics best of lists in 2018; but in the future I have a feeling many people will see the errors of their ways.
