10 Underdogs We're Rooting For At The Oscars

2. Judi Dench (Best Actress - Philomena)

Cate Blanchett has had this category won for over half a year, ever since critics began screening Woody Allen's latest masterpiece, and she has consistently wowed audiences and awards voters with her wild performance ever since. In any other year, this field of performances (including Amy Adams, Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock) would be highly competitive, but considering that Streep gave what is possibly one of the worst performances of her career in August: Osage County, her nomination in particular seems to be have been a frivolous compulsory nod. Judi Dench gives a searing performance in Philomena, and though the film might not be the liveliest or most Earth-shattering of dramas, it hits all the right emotional notes, and is a brilliant platform for Dench to again remind us of how vital a talent she is. I'd love to see her win an Oscar for a performance that's actually worthy this time (even she didn't think she deserved it for Shakespeare In Love), though it has virtually no chance.
