A lot of people probably aren't aware that Keanu Reeves has even directed a movie, never mind a good one, which is a real shame because the defiantly old-school Man of Tai Chi is well worth a second look.

A throwback to the glory days of marital arts cinema that proudly wears those inspirations on its sleeve, the plot follows the simple tournament narrative that's already been done a thousand times before, but this time with an added bit of that modern Hollywood sheen.

Despite being the man behind the camera and the biggest name in the cast, Reeves takes a backseat in a rare villainous turn, with his friend and teacher Tiger Chen playing the lead role and showcasing exactly why he's regarded as one of the industry's premiere choreographers of Eastern-influenced fight scenes.

The Raid's Iko Uwais even shows up in what was his first movie role since his breakout performance in the Indonesian modern classic, but unfortunately Man of Tai Chi bombed hard at the box office despite solid reviews and praise from the likes of John Woo, earning just $5.5m against a $25m budget.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
