10 Underrated Action Movies That Didn't Deserve To Bomb At The Box Office
4. Last Action Hero
Notorious box office bomb Last Action Hero was dogged by problems from the very start, not least the fact that the studio paid Shane Black a million dollars to rewrite a script that was originally conceived by Zak Penn and Adam Leff to satirize the type of movies that the Lethal Weapon writer had built his entire career on.
It didn't help either that it was released a week after Jurassic Park, which would go on to become the highest-grossing movie in history at that point, and the $85m blockbuster resulted in a heavy loss for Columbia Pictures after earning just over $137m worldwide to become the unlucky thirteenth-biggest hit of 1993.
Since then, John McTiernan's self-aware riff on the action genre has undergone something of a reappraisal, with many people now adamant that Last Action Hero was well ahead of its time as a meta-influenced satire and would fare much better in an age where audiences are more switched on than ever to the inner workings of the business.
