The early early to mid 1980s were an interesting time for Disney, with most of the company's films being hit or miss. 1985's The Black Cauldron was one of the hits, and how.

Based off of the second book in Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain, with parts of the other four mixed in, The Black Cauldron marked a dark turn for Disney in that it became the first of the company's movies to receive a "PG" rating for some of its scary imagery, particularly Sir John Hurt's portrayal of The Horned King.

The Black Cauldron received praise for Elmer Bernstein's musical score as well as its use of computer imagery.

Three decades later, the film has gained a whole new legion of fans in part thanks to the expansion in popularity of the fantasy genre, and the internet unearthing its previously unheralded qualities (such as here!).
