10 Underrated Disney Films Everyone Forgets
3. The Devil & Max Devlin
Disney's work in the early 1980s doesn't get a lot of attention, and this dark comedy starring Elliott Gould and Bill Cosby deserves a great deal of it.
Released in 1981, The Devil & Max Devlin tells the story of a shady man who finds himself condemned to Hell, only to learn he can redeem himself so long as he can gain the souls of three others. Needless to say, the plot thickens from that point on.
Gould's goofy and almost nebbish-like turn as Devlin is one of his most underrated roles, while Cosby's dark and corporate Barney is awfully eerie.
What's even better about this movie is that despite its overall hokey story, it teaches an important lesson in the value of being good to others. Devlin's growth from start to finish speaks for itself and the fact that there are no big stars in the film besides Gould and Cosby is a testament to how well the movie ages.
It's not a great movie, but still a very good one.
