Craig Johnson’s dark comedy drama The Skeleton Twins allows stars Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig to flex their acting muscles without having to balance out the seriousness with stupidity for once. With these two leading the cast, you might expect this film to be something of an Apatow-esque affair, though The Skeleton Twins serves as a sobering study into depression and suicide.

The film kicks off with Milo (Hader) writing out a goodbye note and slashing his wrists. At the same time, his estranged fraternal twin sister Maggie (Wiig) is on the verge of downing a fistful of pills, but is interrupted by a phone call from a hospital at the other end of the country informing her of her brother’s attempt to take his own life. The pair reunite after 10 years of not seeing one another and soon come to realise just how similar they have turned out to be.

While a film about depression is going to be, well, depressing by design, The Skeleton Twins is surprisingly heartfelt. After you realise that Hader and Wiig aren’t playing it totally deadpan and likewise stop waiting for the punchlines to come, you start to appreciate their performances for what they are – honest and absorbing.
