10 Underrated Horror Film Sequels That Deserve Another Chance This Halloween

8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

It's not exactly breaking news when a horror franchise changes direction between instalments. With directors rarely ever staying to helm more than one entry in a saga, it makes sense that even the most popular film series' change stylistically with each new movie, but when the director decides to stay on board for the sequel and there's still a radical chance, it can quite rightly take even the most die-hard fans by surprise. Which is probably why the reaction to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 has been so bitter since its first release. With Tobe Hooper, director of the original film staying on to craft its follow up, many fans expected a flick that would stick to the gritty, DIY roots of that first movie. However the film fans eventually got was the polar opposite of what they were expecting. Taking a more comedic approach and adopting a more surrealistic, colourful style, this second instalment knowingly poked fun at the poor production values that made the original so iconic in the first place. Refusing to retread familiar ground, this sequel instead took a gamble on dropping the low-quality faux-documentary style in favour of a primary colour camp-fest. While the tonal shift from movie to movie is quite jarring, the sheer audacity of Hooper's move has to leave you with some kind of affection for this misunderstood sequel.
