10 Underrated Horror Film Sequels That Deserve Another Chance This Halloween

3. A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge

In a series that got so silly it eventually had its antagonist riding a broomstick and cackling like the Wicked Witch of the West, it's always felt a bit weird that the most hated entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise was actually one of the more sinister instalments. Look, there was no way that anything was going to live up to the lightning-in-a-bottle release of Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street, yet Freddy's Revenge at least attempted to take the spirit of that original movie and push the series forward into new and dangerous territories. With a wise-cracking Freddy still a whole movie away, this sequel dug deep into the idea of Freddy being a terrifying dream monster, expanding on the nightmarish potential established in the first film. The set-up allowed for Mark Patton to give one of horror's best performances as Jesse, a teen who slowly loses his mind over the course of the film, constantly taunted and manipulated by Krueger into doing his dirty-work. Like most Nightmare instalments it's got its flaws, yet this experimental second film is better in every way than anything that came after Dream Warriors.
