10 Underrated Horror Movie Moments That Will Scar You For Life
3. The Puppet’s Debut Appearance - Possum
The creator of cult comedy series Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is not the first name many horror fans would likely associate with disturbing contributions to the genre.
But director Matthew Holness' 2018 feature film debut Possum proved the helmer is a dab hand at nightmarish visions as well as goofy meta-comedy, and the film's titular monstrosity is testament to this fact.
A sparse two-hander, the film follows a disgraced puppeteer played by Mission Impossible villain Sean Harris as he returns to his childhood home and faces his abusive uncle, a terrifying Alun Armstrong. For the longest time this slow burn, atmospheric horror refuses to reveal its eponymous character, a horrific puppet which our nominal hero has created to externalize his trauma.
However, when the viewer finally first sees Possum's gangly black spider limbs in all their glory, along with the puppet's dead eyed doll face, a mask modelled on Harris' own visage... It's not likely you'll fall asleep without a few visits from Possum any time soon after.
