Released in 2014, Escape Room director Adam Robitel's still underrated The Taking of Deborah Logan begins as a pretty demure and reserved piece of found footage horror.

Eschewing jump scares and corny supernatural phenomena, the film's subtle invocation of the horrors inherent in ageing allows the story to unravel at a leisurely pace. This gradual build of tension forces viewers to question whether the titular old dear is possessed at all, or whether her deteriorating mental state may be to blame for the changes she's undergoing.

It's a dark and difficult theme to explore, and one which requires the deft touch which the film's thoughtful pacing provides.

Oh, and then near the denouement the old bag detaches her jaw like a f***ing python and eats a kid's skull in one fell swoop.

So yeah, definitely possessed then.

There's also definitely no forgetting that disturbing sight, and no chance that the viewer is ever going to let Robitel lull us into a false sense of security ever any time soon.
