10 Underrated Horror Movie Remakes

7. Thirteen Ghosts (2000)

13 Ghosts Matthew Lillard
Columbia Pictures

Thirteen Ghosts got ravaged by critics upon release but has formed a cult following for a reason. It's a loose remake of the 1960 film that cranked everything up to 11.

A rich collector of all things wacky dies and leaves everything he owns to his nephew. The said collection just so happens to include a house of glass with Latin spells written into the walls, and 12 horrific ghosts. The nephew goes to see the house and predictably haunted shenanigans ensue.

The film's plot moves by so rapidly you are never bored, as the movie's visual style assaults you with fast-paced editing and showcases the sensational production value that really flaunts its $42 million budget.

Each ghost is distinct from a unique, tragic backstory that is undeniably intriguing and their stunning appearances are the highlight of the whole show. They also dispatch the main characters in a variety of gruesome ways that include an infamous scene where a lawyer is split in half unlike anything you've ever seen.

It may not be the least bit scary or believable, but it looks wonderful, moves at an intense pace and the titular ghosts steal the show as some of the most creative specters you'll ever see.

If you don't take it seriously its an incredibly fun, haunted house ride, and really didn't deserve the trashing it got on release.
