10 Underrated Horror Movies You Should Watch This Halloween
5. The Poughkeepsie Tapes
The Poughkeepsie Tapes presents itself in a documentary-style format. After being filmed in 2007, the film was delayed and never got a theatrical release until 2014. This release was only limited, but eventually the film got a Blu-Ray and DVD position in 2017. Finally finding its distribution after ten years makes this film almost coincide with the shocking narrative that it tells.
The title acts as a documentary exploration into a serial killer. This criminal left behind hundreds of tapes graphically showing his exploits. The film takes these tapes and makes a long-form narrative out of examining them and speculating on the motives of the character. The recordings have some horrifically twisted occurrences, as the villain has a passion for the dramatic.
Unfortunately watching the film can be a bit of a struggle. This is not entirely down to its brutal nature, but more the fact that it often steps into melodramatic territory. With some relatively poor performances it does often have you question its believability and at times breaks your immersion.
However, despite its lacking moments, the film is a compelling watch. Some horrible imagery to compliment a fascinating discussion about what it means to glorify a killer makes it worth a look.
