10 Underrated Horror Movies You Should Watch This Halloween

4. Possum

If you're a person that hates puppetry then do not watch this film, unless you don't want to sleep tonight. Possum - created by Matthew Holness - is a terrifying examination of the Freudian concept of the uncanny. We follow Phillip, a disgraced children's puppeteer who returns to his childhood home and confronts the tragedy of his youth at the hands of his abuser.

The film uses the uncanny in the form of Possum, a nightmarish puppet that haunts Phillip. The design of the creature is horrific. It uses a spider-like frame to encompass the creeping sense of dread and a face that appears vaguely human but not. This perpetuates the psychological concept that drives the film.

We see Phillip channel all of his trauma into this creation of his. Through that, the film examines what it means to attempt to combat your experiences and emotions by trying to destroy them as opposed to understand them.

It is filmed in the artistic style of expressionism and has a quality to its aesthetic that makes the world itself feel uncanny, just like the creature. Whilst everything looks real and standard, there is something slightly wrong enough with it to feel troublesome.

Finally, the leading performance by Sean Harris is unbelievable. He generates a character that you can genuinely feel through the screen. It is a powerhouse of a role.

Watch something this Halloween that haunts you, but also gives you a meaningful glance into manifestations of abuse.
