10 Underrated Horror Movies You Should Watch This Halloween

6. Maniac

Over My Dead Body Takashi Miike
IFC Midnight

It was stated earlier in this article that the slasher genre is cliched. This is once again relevant as we see another film that attempts to combat this familiarity by changing the perspective. In the case of Maniac that is quite literal. This remake of the 1980 film of the same name plays almost entirely in a point of view shot, putting you in the shoes of the killer.

The twisted serial killer Frank is a terrifying specimen, played by the fantastic Elijah Wood. He commits these murders with a sense of brutality and sadness. As we see the film from his perspective, we get the chance to watch his manic hallucinations, and in a way, this delivers up a motive for the killer.

However, the film still lets you know that despite how nice he may seem, he is still a murderer. It wonderfully tricks you into rooting for him. Playing into romantic film clichés like the down on his luck nice guy, his crush's mean boyfriend, and a poor relationship with his mother. You empathise with him repeatedly, and then almost feel betrayed yourself when you see him commit these awful acts.

If you want to watch a horror that genuinely does something unique, then look no further.
