10 Underrated Horror Movies You Should Watch This Halloween

3. May

Over My Dead Body Takashi Miike
Lions Gate

May was written and directed by Lucky McKee and stars Angela Bettis as the title character. It is quite a strange thing to experience and runs with its quirkiness as the main selling point. The film follows the titular character, who is a socially awkward vet that develops a crush on a man she meets. From there, it spirals into darkness and peculiarity.

As a character study, this film is fascinating. Bettis is overwhelmingly charming in this role and in a similar vein to Maniac you start to see things from her perspective. However, once events start to become more and more terrifying and unreal, you understand that she has a darkness inside her that cannot be trusted.

The film plays with many different things: mental instability, a fascination with dolls, her obsession with perfection. It juggles with so many moving parts and does an excellent job of balancing them out. Although it can step into territory that is a little too goofy at times, the tone of the film ultimately matches this, and nothing feels out of place.

If you're searching for an experience that will keep you guessing and delivers on a fantastic horror movie character, then you have found it in May.
