10 Underrated Horror Movies You Should Watch This Halloween
2. The Wailing
This film created by Hong-jin Na takes its audience through a compelling two and a half hour runtime. This is abnormally long for a horror title, but it feels justified within the narrative. It doesn't patronise its audience by continually having to wake them up with jump scares or dramatic scenes. Instead The Wailing allows the audience to gain a sense of dread from the thought of this inevitable peril.
It follows policeman Jong-goo as he investigates a mysterious illness that has begun to plague his town. He only gets drawn into the investigation thanks to the fact that his daughter becomes infected with the sickness. The reluctance of the protagonist helps to emit a feeling of helplessness in the audience. They have to place their faith into a man who by no means has any drive to solve the problem outside of his personal motives.
The title takes many twists and turns that will keep you engaged throughout its lengthy runtime. The focus on who is to blame for the sickness takes a top spot in the film's priorities. The efforts of blame frequently become called into question, and much like the characters in the town, you begin to question everyone and everything.
