10 Underrated Movie Characters That Fans Really Hate

1. Scrappy-Doo - Scooby-Doo

Scrappy Doo1Why's he hated? "Wait a minute! He's not a film character!" Whoa, now: relax. Scrappy-Doo wasn't originally a film character, but was a universally-loathed part of the TV series. So loathed, in fact, that TV Tropes titled its page for fan-despised characters after him. Scrappy was brash, annoying, and a myriad of other awful things. He was basically what would happen if the Chicken Hawk from Looney Tunes had a lot more focus. And that's where we get to the worst aspect of his character: he was unavoidable! Near the end of its run, the series wanted to "shake things up" by introducing a sidekick to Scooby-Doo. Because some dumbass thought that a talking dog who was a sidekick to a pothead who was in turn a sidekick to an entire group of teenagers needed a sidekick of his own for some reason. As such, his entire role became an instigator of needless conflict. Remember how most of the humor from Shaggy and Scooby revolved around them trying to run away from trouble? Remember all the inventive ways they would try to outwit the bad guy? Well what if, instead, they always have to save Scrappy from getting beat up (which always plays out in the same manner, mind you), and that's it? Funny, right? Why's he underrated (and on this list)? Well, because he is in a film: 2002's Scooby-Doo. Now, yes - most people think that the film sucks. And it probably does: it was an attempt to cash in on a long-dead franchise that had awful CG and a concept that was inappropriate with regards to the source material. But honestly, I really liked it as a kid. I like the fact that it did just kind of laugh at the whole premise of the series and forced it into a mostly inappropriate sci-fi/fantasy/whatever plot (similar to the film adaptations of The Brady Bunch and The Addams Family). Most of the fun I had with it was in picking up on all the elements the film was deconstructing, or at least making light of. The element most deconstructed was, of course, Scrappy-Doo. By the time the film was released, of course, fans hatred of the character was legendary. Therefore, it was only appropriate that the film acknowledge just how much of an annoying little sh*t Scrappy would be in real life: a flashback shows him peeing on Daphne, spouting his terrible catchphrase, and finally being responsible for the Mystery Inc. crew breaking up (mirroring the show's real-life cancellation). It turns out in the end that Scrappy was actually the villain of the film, plotting revenge on the crew for abandoning him. "Puppy power" indeed. You have to give the creators of this film credit; not many franchises would outright destroy one of their own characters like this. I mean, sure, the series had been off the air for decades, but still, to acknowledge such a huge misstep takes some balls. And that's the exact reason why Scrappy-Doo finds his place on top of this list. Like this list? Let us know in the comments section below.
