10 Underrated Movies Based On Stephen King Stories
4. The (Other) Shining
Technically a miniseries, the 6-hour long 1997 version of King's magnum opus is often compared infavourably to the well-known Stanley Kubrick adaptation, but King himself actually prefers the TV movie and it's not too hard to see why.
For starters, the 1997 version of The Shining is far more faithful to the original source material. Where Kubrick took liberties with the plot in more ways than one to craft his own vision of the story, the 1997 iteration was fully written by King himself and is much more in line with the novel, featuring plenty of classic moments that were cut from the film like the famous hedge monsters and an arguably superior ending.
King was famously critical of Kubrick's movie, but he managed to bring his original story to life very well in this version. Jack is more relatable, Wendy is far less meek, and the fascinating character of Dick Hallorann gets much more screen time. In short, if you enjoyed the novel and want to see that story played out on screen, this is the version to watch.
