10 Underrated Movies With Star Trek Actors

4. Searching - John Cho

The Finest Hours Chris Pine
Sony Pictures

John Cho made a name for himself as the everyman in the Harold and Kumar franchise. His role in the Star Trek reboot series as Hikaru Sulu is one of his biggest to date and gave audiences a chance to see the actor in a new light outside of the aforementioned comedies.

However, some of his most underrated and arguably best work come in the 2018 thriller, Searching. The Aneesh Chaganty-directed film is an acting showcase for Cho, who captures his character's loss and desire to fill it using modern technology. The film's vast majority takes place on various screens and rarely ventures into the real world.

Such a narrative tool can be interpreted as gimmicky, but the film transcends such limitations with Chaganty's script telling a thrilling story with organic twists and turns and an effective emotional hook in addition to the thrills.

The cast is led by Cho, who acts as the heart and soul of the film. He humanizes its visual flourishes and expertly captures its urgency and increasingly ratcheting tension.
