10 Underrated Movies With Star Trek Actors

5. High Flying Bird - Zachary Quinto

The Finest Hours Chris Pine
Netflix

Steven Soderbergh is one of indie cinema's critical and commercial darlings and has elevated the arthouse form of storytelling through his unconventional approach to narrative and technique. This is seen in High Flying Bird, a film entirely shot on an iPhone 8. This is the auteur's second film shot on a mobile device following his thrilling 2018 film, Unsane.

High Flying Bird follows a sports agent's daring attempt to make a pitch to his client (a rookie basketball player) after the agency he works for goes through a lockout. The film stars Andre Holland, Zazie Beetz, Bill Duke, and the modern-day Mr. Spock himself, Zachary Quinto. It also features bit roles from basketball players such as Reggie Jackson and Karl-Anthony Towns.

The 90-minute feature is well-paced and never drags at any point, and features razor-sharp commentary on the cutthroat nature of the sports world, race relations, and rampant consumerism centered on athletes. These themes are well conveyed by the game cast, who greatly benefit from rhythmic (and almost manic) dialogue and incredible technical proficiency from Soderbergh, who directed, shot, and edited the feature.
