10 Underrated Rom-Coms You Have To See

2. Saving Face

Celeste And Jesse Forever
Sony Pictures Classics

Saving Face is a rom-com drama film directed and written by Alice Wu, and centres on themes of love, family and identity with a beautifully written script and some truly unforgettable characters. Only the second Hollywood film to focus on Chinese-Americans, it is also a film about prejudice and stereotypes, with all of its themes wrapped up brilliantly inside a sweet and unconventional story.

Wil (Michelle Krusiec) has recently come to terms with her identity as a lesbian, but doesn't want to come out yet to her widowed mother (Joan Chen) or her traditional grandparents. But after her mother reveals she is pregnant, Wil must take her in and look after her, putting on strain on their relationship, their secrets, and Wil's budding relationship with her girlfriend, Vivian (Lynn Chen).

At its heart, Saving Face is a tender and massively sweet love story, but watching it you can't help but notice that there are bigger themes at play regarding family and expression. It also has a warm and charming sense of humour, which allows the film to never feel over-stuffed or forced, and features performances guaranteed to make you smile with every scene.
