10 Underrated Rom-Coms You Have To See

1. Definitely, Maybe

Celeste And Jesse Forever
Universal Pictures

Featuring an all-star cast including Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks, Abigail Breslin and Kevin Kline, Definetly, Maybe is the most refreshing take on the rom-com genre to make it onto this list. A film complete with a clever, time-jumping narrative, it's kind of like How I Met Your Mother - only it's two hours long and features a much more satisfying ending.

Released in 2008, the film sees Will Hayes (Reynolds) going through a divorce and forced to recount his love life to his precocious daughter, Maya (Breslin). In the ensuing story, Will recounts his three most prominent relationships, start to finish, whilst Maya attempts to guess which woman (Fisher, Weisz or Banks) is her mother.

The joy of Definitely, Maybe is its complete lack of formula and ability to keep even the most attentive viewer guessing about the overall outcome. The script is clever and lacks any major bumps, the performances of Reynolds, Fisher and Breslin are full of charm and intelligence, and the themes of friendship, love and family ring true with every passing scene.

And amongst the rom-com elements of the film, there's also a sweet father/daughter sub-plot and enough assessments of adult life and growing up to keep you satisfied right until to the closing credits.

It's a fun, smart, sweet and fresh film, and not one you'll want to miss.
