10 Underwhelming Shock Twists That Made Films Worse
1. Planet Of The Apes - The Apes Changed Human History... Somehow
Planet of the Apes (the original) has one of the greatest movie endings ever. After George Taylor believed he crash-landed on an alien world, he finds the remnants of the Statue of Liberty and realises he was on Earth all along.
When Tim Burton announced he was remaking the film, everybody wondered how he was going to top the original's twist.
Simple. He didn't. In Burton's version an astronaut, Leo Davidson, lands on an alien planet called Ashlar, which is populated by ape-like creatures. In the end, he returns to Earth and lands his vessel by the Lincoln Memorial, only to learn the president's statue is now of Thade; the simian general Leo fought against on Ashlar. As the area is suddenly swamped by ape-reporters and ape-cops, the movie abruptly ends.
Wait. What happened? Is this a parallel universe? How did Thade time-travel? How did he become Aperaham Lincoln? It's never explained. Even the film's star, Tim Roth, said he couldn't make heads or tails of the climax
You know what the weirdest thing is about this scene? This was the ending to the original novel! Not only that, the author, Pierre Boulle, believed it was a superior conclusion to the original movie!
