8. Robert Redford - All is Lost
The Film: All is Lost revolves around a man who has become lost at sea; no more, no less.
Why He Could Win: I know what you're thinking; how is Robert Redford an unlikely Oscar nominee? Well, the guy hasn't had an acting nomination in 40 years, and so this would be a major coup for someone who has generally turned his talents more towards directing than acting. More to the point, this is an extremely challenging, experimental film, in which Redford is the only cast member, and as a result doesn't have much dialogue to speak. Instead, the genius of the performance is in the actor's physical commitment to the role, and his use of facial expressions. Sublime.
Other Talent: Oscar nominee J.C. Chandor (writer-director).
