9. The Guillotine Scene - Something Wicked This Way Comes
Walt Disney PicturesMight be going out on a limb here, but a beheading seems like an excruciatingly violent thing to feature in a kids movie. Especially when the filmmakers are brazen enough to show the decapitated head. Disney's adaptation of Ray Bradbury's novel, Something Wicked This Way Comes, certainly follows in their darker traditions, joining the ranks of the other mild horror films they have made over the years. The movie pits two boys fighting to save their small town from an evil carnival lead by Mr. Dark, a young and creepy Jonathan Pyrce, who stalks through the town with the boys portraits drawn on his hands, seeking to claim their souls. The entire movie is filled with small bits and pieces you wouldn't expect to find in children's fare, but the real shocker comes after Will and Jim witness Mr. Dark and his dust witch electrocuting a man for information. As they run for their lives they are confronted with the apparition of Will having his head suddenly struck off by a guillotine. This scene was lifted from the book so its inclusion was expected, but the real shocker is the cutaway shot of Will's bloody, severed head starring up at him from a picnic basket. Leave it to Mouse House to push the envelope wherever they can.
