10 Unexpectedly Awesome 2017 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck

2. Wonder Woman

Why It Should've Sucked: Ahead of Wonder Woman's release, the DC Extended Universe's three released movies were all extremely divisive with both critics and audiences, so simple probability dictated that number four likely wouldn't be much different. Why would it be?

Why It Was Awesome: Against the odds, Wonder Woman turned out to be one of the year's most entertaining superhero movies, a stylish, fun and affecting comic book romp, with Gal Gadot decisively proving the doubters wrong in her first full movie as the iconic hero.

Some may argue that it feels too much like a Marvel movie, but if that means a great tonal balance and a potent sense of hope and optimism, then that's surely a good thing, right?

With Justice League unlikely to topple Wonder Woman at the box office, it seems likely that Diana is going to be the DCEU's shining beacon for the foreseeable future. Don't be surprised if Wonder Woman 2 gives the series its first billion-dollar movie.

And moreover, hopefully its success will light a fire under Marvel when it comes to female-led superhero films, which the MCU is curiously lacking to date.
