10 Unexpectedly Awesome 2017 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck

3. Paddington 2

Why It Should've Sucked: Though 2014's Paddington was a pleasant surprise, the marketing for this sequel seemed to suggest that it was going to be a phoned-in family sequel that would fail to replicate the original's sweet warmth.

Why It Was Awesome: Incredibly, Paddington 2 wasn't just a worthy follow-up to its hugely successful predecessor, but an effortlessly superior sequel which benefited from sharper visuals, more creative direction, a stronger villain (Hugh Grant is magnificent here), and an emotional core that'll have even the most hardened cynics fighting back tears.

What seemed destined to be a lazy sequel fresh off the conveyor belt is one of the best movie sequels in recent memory, and will certainly ensure fans are less skeptical about the inevitable Paddington 3.
