10 Most Unexpectedly Tragic Endings To Otherwise Fun Movies

6. The Trip (2010)

Released in the UK as a six-part TV series, and in the US as a condensed feature film version, The Trip follows comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they embark on a restaurant tour across the north of England. The actors play themselves in a sort of unacknowledged mockumentary, and spend most of their time bickering and doing impressions of actors like Michael Caine, Al Pacino and Woody Allen (to see who can do the best one, of course). The tone is noticeably broody and sombre throughout, but the whole thing is still a blast to watch. And given that The Trip is a comedy of sorts, the ending comes across as somewhat brutal in retrospect. After the trip is over and done with, then, Brydon returns to the warmth of his loving wife and newborn child. Coogan, on the other hand, retires to the cold, clinical space of his expensive London flat, and stares depressingly out of the window in the wake of his failed relationship with American girlfriend Misha. What makes this so unexpected, of course, is that Coogan is playing himself here. Though The Trip is fictional, there's no escaping the feeling that there's some truth in that final - and arguably haunting - shot.
