If you want to find terrifying and creative creatures, you'd better look to Asian folklore, as the monsters from Southeast Asian mythology can be next-level scary. The Penanggalan is certainly one of them, but you might not get it from this movie.
Mystics in Bali is a bonkers film that is a blast to watch, if not always for the right reasons, and one particularly memorable scene is the appearance of this bizarre monster. It really should be terrifying, and on some level it is. However, it's also kind of hilarious.
The Penanggalan is a vampiric creature that looks like a regular person during the day. However, it changes at night as its head separates from its body, floating around with its spine and organs dangling below. Damn, that's metal!
While the concept is downright chilling, it doesn't come across well in this film, as the floating head features some incredibly dated visual effects. Watching as this creature glides about the place attacking people and sucking babies out of pregnant women is just too goofy to take seriously.
