10 Unluckiest Sci-Fi Movie Characters Ever

8. Cooper - Interstellar

Interstellar Matthew Mcconaughey
Warner Bros.

You have to feel for Interstellar's Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who makes the agonising decision to join a NASA mission to find another habitable planet for humanity, in turn separating him from his children.

And due to the mission bringing him in proximity of a black hole, time passes much faster back on Earth, enough that when Coop finally returns to Earth at the end of the movie, 89 years have passed, despite Coop himself having barely aged at all.

And so, Coop is finally reunited with his daughter Murph (Ellen Burstyn), who he promised he would return to. The rub? She's now an extremely old woman, and within moments of their reunion, Murph effectively tells her father to leave.

Murph, clearly close to death, tells her father that he shouldn't have to see her die, and that he should seek out his fellow astronaut Brand (Anne Hathaway), who is prepping a new planet for habitation.

That's... quite the tragic outcome for Coop, who fought so hard to fulfill his promise and get back to Murph, only for her to now be more than double his age, on death's door no less, and telling him to go away.
