4. The Amazing Spider-Man
Because of the short gap between Tobey Maguire leaving Spider-Man and Andrew Garfield stepping into the suit, there was a lot of pressure on The Amazing Spider-Man to do something different. The film needed to set itself apart from the trilogy that had come before by trying something new and unpredictable, while still assuring fans that it was still a film about Spidey. Eddie Yang designed a Spider-Man costume that would have done just that. It had the familiar old colour scheme, but with some snazzy new touches like bigger eye holes, an off-centre spider emblem, a visible six pack and most winningly, for fans of the very early comics a web-like netting across the back. Yangs design is instantly recognisable as Spidey, but also very far removed from the suits that had come before. It would have been perfect to establish the reboot as a blending of old iconography with cool new ideas, but instead Sony opted for a far safer and simpler Spidey suit that only really added web-shooters to the old design.
